Home Before Dark

Author: Julie Edmonds
Illustrator: Susan Richards
Themes: Independence, Perseverance, Self-realisation, Confidence, Parenting

The story unfolds in a rural setting. It tells how Sarah perseveres and gains confidence, self-realisation, and independence by making it home to Mum before dark. Even though everywhere looked blurred and strange through the rain. And home seemed a long way away.

Pastel illustrations by Susan Richards beautifully capture the rainy, late afternoon mood. Sarah’s determination to keep going and her relief when she realises the track still leads home when I’m by myself, even in the rain.

The author’s childhood experiences on her grandparent’s farm in the Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia, inspired Home before Dark.

Home before Dark is a companion book for Sarah Remembers … summers spent with her Nan by the sea.
